Frequently Asked Questions
What programs do you offer?
GGTC tutoring is highly individualized. Tutors tailor fit tutoring for each student according to his or her learning goals. For the student who is often bored with schoolwork, the tutor can challenge him/her to delve deeper into the subject with enlightening activities and research. For the student who lacks motivation to attempt homework, the tutor will help her understand the material, get started and even love learning it. For the disorganized student, the tutor will help him set goals, develop a personal method of keeping track of assignments, and follow up with him regularly regarding his progress.
What ages are your students?
Golden Gate Tutoring Center students range from age 5 to 80. It's never too soon or too late to learn something new. While many of our students are elementary, middle & high school students, several adults have enrolled in private or group language tutoring with our native language speakers. The tutor designs a program to fit each student's learning goals and assists the achievement of those goals with subject expertise and professionalism.
Where are you located?
Golden Gate Tutoring Center is in downtown San Anselmo at 249 Sir Francis Drake Blvd., in the alley just behin Marin Coffee Roasters. For a map, click Location.
What are your credentials?
Many of GGTC's tutors are certified teachers, and all have expertise in a variety of fields. Click Tutors to see all tutors' bios. Golden Gate Tutoring Center is not an accredited institution and, therefore, cannot administer grades, exams or school credit to students.
How much does tutoring cost?
Individual tutoring is $65 per hour, and group tutoring is $40 per hour per student. The tutor writes a contract for each student at the beginning of each month including a schedule of meetings and all charges involved. Payment is due at the first meeting of the month.
What is the benefit of Group Tutoring?
Groups range from 2 to 8 students. Some students benefit more from group tutoring than from individual. In homework groups, students work more independently on assignments and projects and request the tutor's assistance when needed. Tutors review homework quality, quiz students on test material and followup on progress for major projects. Study groups are more cost-effective and help students keep up with homework over the course of the entire semester without depending too much on a tutor. In SAT groups and language groups, students learn and practice the material together. Often, explaining his or her method to another student solidifies the concept in both students. Tutors guide this process by challenging the students with new material, testing and learning tips and practical exercises.
What is the benefit of Individual Tutoring?
Individual tutoring is usually a more effective means to helping students achieve learning goals. The tutor can customize any material to the student's weaknesses, personality and interests and cover the most ground in a short amount of time.
How can I best prepare for the SAT?
Start early! Register for the exam. Visit collegeboard.com to find test dates, register, pay, and start test prep. Take as many free practice tests as you can (see Test prep for our schedule of practice tests) or use the collegeboard.com online practice test. The more familiar you are with the test, the wording of the questions, and how it's scored, the better you'll do. Attend several group SAT review sessions to score your practice tests, go over your wrong answers and make a plan on how to improve your score. Purchase an SAT review book and study on your own or with a tutor about one or two days per week for at least 5 weeks before the exam. This will ensure the test material is fresh in your mind as well as give you some extra tips and strategies to win you a few more points. Get a good night's sleep before the exam and arrive early so you are not flustered. Don't forget your calculator and pencils.
Is the ACT easier than the SAT?
Some students score higher on the ACT than on the SAT; others do not. Understanding the differences in the exams and perhaps trying both is the best method. Be sure to check with the colleges to which you are applying to see if they will accept an ACT score. Often, college registrars translate ACT scores (36 possible points) into SAT scores to the student's benefit. The ACT has four sections (math, English, reading comprehension, and science reasoning) and an optional essay. Students who score lower on the SAT math sections and who do well in science classes will possibly receive a better score on the ACT. For more information on this exam, visit www.act.org. Students may take a free ACT Practice Test at Golden Gate Tutoring Center and review individually or form a group to prepare for the ACT exam.
